My Monkey Bird

Good Morning Everyone!

Today is a special day. Today marks two years since Luna Bird came to live with The Beard and I. Wow. This is one of those times where when I say it, two years sounds like such a short time. I feel like he's always been with us. I'd hoped to have his Tumblr more updated for today but I just haven't had the time - although I did add just a few new photos. Including these...

Baby Luna, before his polka dot cheeks, when his cere was still the neutral baby color.

Luna trying to blend into our beach towels in Santa Barbara. He makes a pretty good chameleon, no?

Exploring his first small playground.

Playing on top of his "room" {aka cage, but room sounds more friendly}.

Living with Luna's mess on a good day. When he molts... oh boy it gets crazy.

Luna saying thank you for his new bigger playground.

Inspecting my paper stock purchases.

Snack time.

These I took these yesterday afternoon. It's the first time Luna's let me take photos of him grooming! The light's a little weird cause it's been cloudy all day but I couldn't resist. Recently he's been saying, "Hello crazy monkey bird!" - it's hilarious. Do you have any funny suggestions for words or phrases I should teach him?

Happy two year home-coming sweet muffin bird. I love you so much!

Amendment::: You know, I wasn't originally going to add this in but after I finished putting the post together and walked away from the computer I felt compelled to come back and say more. I feel so blessed and grateful for the last two years with Luna because of all the unexpected things I've learned from him. When I first decided to get a bird it was really more of an impulse decision. And to be honest one I wouldn't repeat if I'd known what I was getting myself into. Training Luna and raising him has required more time and effort than I could've imagined. But as I said, I'm grateful. The most important things I've learned from raising/training him have been about God's love for me. Have you guys heard the verse from the Bible that goes, "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" Well I've always liked that verse but now I feel like I have a much more realistic view of what it means. I provide for Luna, I feed him, love him, protect him in sort of the same way God provides for me. It might be weird but I imagine it feels a bit like a parent caring for a child. It's given me a deeper understanding of what it looks like to God when I get angry about things that are out of my control or that I don't understand. I've definitely learned to trust God more because of the times I wish Luna would trust me more. I can see things and navigate situations that he can't comprehend, if he just trusted me things would be a lot less stressful for him. I imagine God says the same thing about my understanding versus his. There was one situation in particular when I was trying to teach Luna something and he got really freaked out and mad at me. Without thinking I said, "Luna don't be mad because you don't understand what's happening, be happy because I love you and will take care of you!" {yes I talk to my bird - judge me if you'd like} And immediately after I said it I realized God was using my own words to talk to me also. I'd been frustrated with God about something that was happening that I didn't understand but in that moment I completely surrendered to him and I'll admit things got much less frustrating really quickly.

Well that ended up being a really long amendment. Thanks for reading friends. I'm sorry if the writing is sloppy or grammatically incorrect, this is all off the top of my head. I just wanted to take this opportunity to share a bit more of what's on my heart with you.

Now you're more than welcome to call me a crazy bird lady and judge me for acting as if my pet bird is my child. Haha! I hope you all have a great weekend!

  1. This is adorable! Luna is gorgeous and your love for him in infectious!

  2. This is so very lovely and I know exactly what you mean! Luna is such a beauty and sure is lucky to have you! xxx

  3. What a handsome little guy! Happy 2nd adoptionversary Luna :)

  4. Yay! Animals are so special, they deserve to be celebrated! Do you let him fly free around your home? I have always wanted a bird, but couldn't bring myself to keep it caged. Now that I think of it, with the cat, a free bird maaayyyy not be the smartest idea.

  5. sweet girl, I loved reading what you wrote:) And I've never thought of owning a bird could be so relational to God's love for us. it's amazing how He shows us His love through the creatures he gives us to care for. Thank you for being brave enough to share your heart. My heart is so happy for you:)
